The Alpine Research Center is located 1.5 km east of the of Finse railway station in the municipality of Ulvik, on the northwestern corner of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in southern central Norway (60° 36' N, 7° 30' E). The center is accessible year-round by train (4.5 hours from Oslo and 2.5 hours from Bergen).

Finse lies in the low alpine zone at 1222 meters above sea level, about 250 meters above the tree line. The climate is somewhat oceanic, with relatively mild winters (for the altitude and latitude) and cool summers (see weather statistics).

Note that the road is not cleared for snow until the first or second week of July, and skis are usually required to get around in the terrain until late June (check the snow conditions on our webcam). The weather is often harsh during the winter and we do not recommend trying to get to the station after dark during this time of the year if you are not familiar with the area.
